Lens hosted and thrashed Toulouse 4-1 on Tuesday night, securing their return to the French Cup final 28 years after their last appearance. This will be the fourth final in the club’s history, as they seek their first title in the competition.
Florian Thauvin opened the scoring from the penalty spot in the ninth minute, and in the 18th minute, Allan Saint-Maximin made it 2-0. Shortly after, Santiago Hidalgo reduced Toulouse’s deficit to 2-1, but Matthieu Udol’s goal in the 35th minute gave Pierre Sage’s team a 3-1 lead going into the second half.
The goal that sealed the result was scored by Adrien Thomasson in the 74th minute.
In the final, Lens will face the winner of Strasbourg-Nice, a match scheduled for 8 pm on Wednesday.
Lens, along with Nîmes, is among the finalists who have never won the French Cup, and it has the most defeats: three in total. They lost the finals in 1948, 1975, and 1998. They are seeking glory again, in a season where they are also fighting for the league title ( they have 62 points in second place, one less than the leader PSG, who have 63 points and one game less ).
After the final whistle, the fans invaded the pitch to celebrate the qualification.
