Overcoming challenges is the act or effect of overcoming, that is, conquering obstacles, difficulties, fears or limits, achieving success. Football players who go through the youth systems of big clubs and then leave for other clubs have to overcome challenges and demonstrate that this only gave them strength to achieve something better. Many fail. Tiago Gabriel is not one of those cases: the centre=back is succeeding, for now, and has reached Serie A in Italy.
Tiago Gabriel was born on December 26, 2004. He spent six years in Sporting’s youth ranks before moving to Vitória FC in Setúbal. When he transitioned to the senior team, he joined Estrela da Amadora, where he played for the under=23s, B team, and first team. He excelled at the José Gomes stadium and was transferred to Lecce.
Tiago Gabriel is 1.95m tall, which makes him physically imposing in aerial duels, both defensively and offensively. In offensive set pieces, such as corners, free kicks or long throws from his team, he is one of the targets and usually manages to create danger in these moments, not only because of his size and stature, but also because of his jumping ability and ease in aerial play.
Defensively, despite his age, he is already a very mature player, standing out for his composure and ability to make good decisions, whether in tackling, marking, or defensive positioning. He demonstrates good game reading skills and tactical intelligence, being effective in covering and anticipating plays. He often looks to press his direct marker and also jumps for the ball, where he frequently wins duels and is highly effective.
With the ball, Tiago Gabriel sometimes makes mistakes due to overconfidence, leading to some losses in dangerous areas of the field for the team. He is a quality player in build-up play, both as a central defender playing on the right and on the left, but there are times when he needs to be more cerebral and less spectacular: it is in this aspect that Tiago can improve.
The teams he has played for are usually teams that play in low blocks, that is, they play close to their defensive area. There, the positive characteristics of the Portuguese center-back, such as physical duels or aerial play, help him to succeed and stand out.
If he continues to grow as he has in recent years and is transferred to a larger club where he has to play in a higher defensive block, pressing opponents more high up the pitch, Tiago will have to adapt to that type of game, and that’s something he hasn’t been tested much yet.
Tiago Gabriel is currently a starter and one of the key elements of Lecce’s defensive line, which has led to his name being linked to bigger clubs. He is a centre-back who has all the credentials to become a reference defender, possibly even for the National Team. His youth, combined with physique, technique and maturity, makes him a very interesting defensive prospect, ideal for teams looking for a modern centre-back, secure on the ball, strong in duels and with room for growth.
