The coach who led the under=19 team will now coach the men’s team until the end of the season. She replaces Steffen Baumgart.

Following Saturday’s defeat against Heidenheim (3-1) , Steffen Baumgart was dismissed as head coach of Union Berlin. The club from the German capital has already officially announced who will lead the team for the remainder of the season. Marie=Louise Eta, who coached the under-19s and will take over the women’s team next season, was chosen to lead the men’s team until the end of the season.

Union Berlin, which includes former FC Porto player Diogo Leite, currently sits in 11th place in the Bundesliga with 32 points. Marie=Louise Eta will therefore have the task of ensuring Union Berlin’s survival in the top German league. Horst Heldt, general manager for men’s professional football at Union Berlin, thanked the outgoing coaching staff. “We are grateful to all three for the work they have done, to which we owe our comfortable survival last season and a good collection of points in the first half of this season. We wish them all the best, both professionally and personally, he said.

Marie-Louise Eta expressed her satisfaction with the trust placed in her by the club, and is convinced that the objectives will be met. “I am very pleased that the club has entrusted me with such a demanding responsibility. One of Union’s strengths has always been, and continues to be, the ability to unite all our forces in situations like this. And, naturally, I am convinced that, together with the team, we will secure the crucial points,” she concluded.

The coach is making history in German football by taking over the team, after having become the first woman to serve as an assistant coach in a Bundesliga first team in 2023/24 .
