The club had hoped it would be possible to freely discuss different proposals or changes to the model presented by the LPFP.

Nacional criticized the way the Portuguese Professional Football League (LPFP) conducted the General Assembly (GA) on April 17, whose sole item on the agenda was the commercialization of audiovisual rights for the First and Second Leagues.

Regarding the issue of marketing audiovisual rights for professional competitions in the domestic market, Nacional believes that this meeting should have allowed for the free discussion of different proposals or changes to the model presented by the LPFP, reads the official statement on the island club’s website.

In the same statement, the Madeiran club goes even further, expressing total repudiation of the League’s handling of the proceedings during the General Assembly, which took place at the organization’s headquarters in Porto.

The way in which the scheduling of an Extraordinary General Meeting and the clubs’ subscription to it are being attempted is considered to have prevented the sports clubs from discussing this issue freely and constructively,” the statement said.

Finally, Nacional requests that the LPFP schedule an Extraordinary General Meeting, similar to those it has always held and without requiring a request from the clubs, aiming to provide an open discussion on the topic, given its importance for the development and future of Portuguese football.

On Friday, professional football clubs overwhelmingly approved the model for marketing audiovisual rights at a General Assembly, with Benfica voting against.

Besides Nacional, which abstained, Benfica was the only club not to ratify the proposal from the Portuguese Professional Football League (LPFP) regarding the procedure for the sale of audiovisual rights for the First and Second Leagues in the domestic market.

Following the conclusion of the general meeting, which included representatives from all clubs but lacked the presence of the presidents of the three ‘big’ clubs, at the Liga Portugal Arena in Porto, the organization’s leader, Reinaldo Teixeira, highlighted the consensus reached by 31 of the 33 sports clubs.
