Lens has been one of the surprises in Ligue 1 and has already secured second place and a spot in the Champions League next season. The game in which the team secured qualification for the prestigious competition was against Nantes, with the winning goal scored by Mezian Mesloub: a 16-year-old who is a youth international for the Portuguese national team.

But who is Mezian Mesloub, who also has Soares in his name?

Born in France, he was developed at Lorient and Lens, and is the son of Walid Mesloub, a former Algerian international and well-known figure in French football. He grew up immersed in the game and has been considered one of the greatest talents of the Lens academy for several years. Despite being born in France, Mesloub chose to represent Portugal, the country of his mother’s origins, having already represented the under-16 and under-17 teams.

Strengths: technical quality and interpretation of spaces.

Mezian belongs to the new wave of technically gifted French midfielders, capable of playing in tight spaces, accelerating with the ball, and taking on a leading role between the lines. This type of midfielder stands out because they are different from the more physical, prototype of the French midfielder.

He is a young player who is comfortable receiving the ball, protecting it under pressure, and escaping congested areas with few touches. He almost always plays with his head up and manages to speed up the game without losing focus. He has the profile to function as an inside midfielder, a creative number eight, or even further forward, closer to the final third, where his relationship with the ball is very important.

Another distinguishing characteristic is his ability to interpret spaces. Despite his age, he demonstrates a very interesting understanding of the timing of approaches and the positioning between the lines. He knows when to drop back to link up play, but also when to appear in creative zones or attack the penalty area. This positional intelligence means he rarely disappears from the game and helps him maintain a continuous influence on the offensive circulation of possession.

Areas for improvement: physical condition and decision-making.

Mezian is still growing and will inevitably need to gain strength to compete regularly at the highest level. Today he manages to survive largely through technique and intelligence, but the definitive leap will require a different level of physicality, stamina, and consistent competition. Even so, he is a player who has room to improve in this aspect, considering he is a junior playing with the best.

Like many talented young midfielders, he takes many risks in seeking vertical passes or more difficult solutions. This increases the team’s creative potential, but also leads to avoidable losses. Finding a balance between irreverence and management will be an important step in his development.

Potential

At Lens, a club that has invested heavily in the development of young players and in an aggressive, intense, and direct style of play, the environment is ideal for growth. And the recent impact in Ligue 1, with a goal just seconds after his debut for the first team, only reinforced the idea that there is potential there far above average. Mezian combines what is most difficult to teach: technical sensitivity, spontaneous creativity, and understanding of the game. In the right context, with playing time and patience, he can transform himself into an international-level attacking midfielder. He has the tools to build a career at the highest level. And there’s something that usually separates great talents from the rest: when they step onto the pitch, the game seems to unfold faster for them. In Mezian Mesloub’s case, that feeling already exists, and he’s ready for big challenges.
