Jose Mourinho admits to having spoken with his agent about this possibility.
In reaction to Benfica’s last game of the season (a 3-1 victory over Estoril), Jose Mourinho admitted the content of a conversation with Jorge Mendes in which Real Madrid came up.
The only thing I have in hand is the offer from Benfica, which I haven’t seen, but Jorge Mendes says it’s a very good offer. But it’s also true that I haven’t spoken to anyone from Real Madrid. But nobody’s stupid, and obviously, between Real and Jorge, I think there have been contacts that could turn into contacts with me during the next week. Then I should decide my future.
Reasons to leave or stay
I’m not going to comment much on this, unlike many coaches, when I leave a club I don’t comment on the past, I look to the present. I’m not going to justify my reasons. But I have things to think about, obviously.
Difference between Mourinho’s speech and the news.
“How do I justify it? You’re the one who has to justify it. One minute you see one thing, the next minute the opposite in the newspapers. I can’t say more than I already have. You must understand the phenomenon better than I do. I thank the president for making me Benfica’s coach. For offering me a contract renewal. We decided on that 10-day window and I want to use it, not to leave, but to have time to decide. I have no offer, I have nothing. The only thing I have, and I’m clear about this, is that my agent spoke to me and said: ‘Be aware that there could be a real and serious situation with Real Madrid.’ Let’s wait and see.
