Abel Ferreira is the target of a lawsuit from CONMEBOL and risk…

The issue concerns the Portuguese coach’s statements following the draw against Colombian side Junior Barranquilla.

Conmebol has opened disciplinary proceedings against Abel Ferreira for the statements made by the Palmeiras coach a week ago, after the draw with Junior Barranquilla (1-1) in the first round of the Copa Libertadores. The coach even praises the VAR’s performance, but, with some irony, alludes to last season which could lead to another punishment.

We remind you that the Portuguese coach is serving a seven-game suspension in the Brasileirao [four games remain to be served] and now risks a new disciplinary sanction in the Libertadores.

After the draw with the Colombians, Abel Ferreira, in a press conference, praised the VAR intervention that awarded the penalty allowing Junior Barranquilla to tie the game, but ended up making an allusion to last season’s Libertadores final, which Conmebol didn’t like.

It’s clear that Mauricio wants to move his foot away, but there is contact. It seems that this year VAR will work. This is good, last year CONMEBOL’s VAR didn’t work and this year it seems it will, and that’s good. There really was contact, the coach admitted.

Abel Ferreira was referring to the 2025 final, when VAR was not called upon to review a possible red card for Erick Pulgar after a foul, off the ball, on Bruno Funchs.

Palmeiras will now have until next Friday to present their defense of the Portuguese coach, in a competition where Abel Ferreira, who has already managed 63 games since 2020, has never been sent off.
