Grêmio, coached by Portuguese Luís Castro, could only manage a goalless draw at home against Remo, the bottom-placed team in the Brasileirão, in the game that closed the 10th round, on Sunday night (early Monday morning) in Portugal.
Against the bottom-placed team, Grêmio even hit the post in the first half through Francis Amuzu, but Remo also had chances to score. In Grêmio’s goal, Weverton shone, highlighting his good performance by saving a penalty near halftime, in the 41st minute, in a duel with Alef Manga, a striker who had a brief spell in Portugal with UD Oliveirense.
In the second half, even with a one-man advantage after Yago Pikachu’s expulsion in the 68th minute, Grêmio tried, but couldn’t manage more than a 0-0 draw.
With this result, Grêmio returns to scoring points after two defeats and is now 11th in the standings with 12 points. Remo moves out of last place and now has seven points, as does Cruzeiro, coached by Artur Jorge, who lost the previous day against São Paulo . Mirassol, defeated at home by Bragantino at the same time as Grêmio’s game, is now 20th and last in the standings with six points.
The night was also marked by the victory of Palmeiras, coached by Portuguese manager Abel Ferreira , which reinforced their lead in the Brazilian Championship.
