Romania’s national football team coach, Mircea Lucescu, felt unwell during the technical meeting before the Romanian team’s training session on Sunday morning and was taken to the hospital.

The Romanian Football Federation (FRF) clarified in a statement shortly after the incident that during the technical meeting preceding the final training session before the trip to Slovakia, coach Mircea Lucescu felt unwell and that first aid was immediately administered by the national team’s medical staff.

According to Romanian sports media, such as DigiSport, Lucescu, 80, complained of feeling unwell and dizzy.

“Following the call to the 112 emergency service, two teams from SMURD [Romanian Emergency Medical, Resuscitation and Extrication Service] urgently went to the training center,” the Federation further clarified, adding that the rapid intervention of the medical team allowed the coach to be stabilized quickly.

At this time, the coach’s health is stable. However, in accordance with current medical protocols and to eliminate any risk, Mircea Lucescu has been transferred to a hospital in the capital for further examinations and specialized monitoring, the entity concluded. Romania, eliminated in the semi-finals of the 2026 World Cup play-offs by Turkey 1-0 last Thursday, visits Slovakia on Tuesday for a friendly match, with Lucescu’s participation in the game in doubt.
