Benfica midfielder Gianluca Prestianni may be at risk of missing the next World Cup after FIFA confirmed the possibility of the Argentine serving his suspension during the final tournament matches.
This suspension is reminiscent of the punishment applied by UEFA to Prestianni , after he was accused of homophobia during the Champions League round of 16 play=off match between Benfica and Real Madrid.
The young Argentinian was punished with a three-match suspension in UEFA competitions, a punishment now extended to FIFA competitions. Prestianni has already served the first of the three-match suspension, in the second leg against Real Madrid, but now risks missing Argentina’s first two World Cup matches if called up by Lionel Scaloni.
If he is not among the players selected by the Argentine coach, Prestianni will serve his suspension in Benfica’s next two European matches, whether in the Europa League or the Champions League.
We remind you that the Benfica player could see his penalty increased from three to six games if he reoffends within the next two years.
