Bayern Munich responded to their Champions League semi=final elimination with a hard-fought victory at the home of struggling Wolfsburg (1-0) , who with this Saturday’s defeat are mathematically eliminated from any chance of securing direct promotion to the Bundesliga.
The home team were better in the first half, although the best opportunity was wasted by Harry Kane in the 36th minute when he missed a penalty. Earlier, Bischof had already hit the woodwork of the Wolfsburg goal (19th minute).
After the break, Bayern’s dominance intensified, and the goal finally came in the 56th minute, scored by Michael Olise. A signature goal, it should be noted.
Despite their superiority on the pitch, the German champions failed to extend their lead and ended up disappointed. Especially when Mattias Svanberg, through on goal, hit the post with Urbig beaten (89th minute).
Bayern Munich secured their 27th Bundesliga victory, concluding their unbeaten away record. In the relegation battle, Wolfsburg can no longer secure direct promotion ( their defeat in matchday 33 guarantees Werder Bremen and Cologne’s survival), but they have an advantage in the playoff race, heading into a final against St. Pauli in the last round of the German league.
Both teams have the same 26 points, but Wolfsburg has a better goal difference than St. Pauli (-26 against -29), so a draw will be enough for them in Hamburg next week to guarantee their survival. Bottom=placed Heidenheim has already been relegated to the Second Division.
