Italian Davide Massa has been appointed by UEFA to referee the Sporting Braga match in Freiburg, for the second leg of the Europa League semi-finals.
The most curious thing is that the 40-year-old referee had also been appointed for the match in Seville, in the epic 4-2 victory over Betis, which secured qualification for the semi-finals.
Davide Massa will thus officiate two consecutive away games for Carlos Vicens’ team in the Europa League, and he will have the same refereeing team: Filippo Meli and Stefano Alassio as assistants, Daniele Chiffi as VAR, and Luca Pairetto as AVAR. Only the fourth official will be different: this time it is the Belgian Erik Lambrechts.
In addition to being part of Sporting Braga’s epic victory in Seville, which secured their qualification for the semi-finals, David Massa was also involved in another memorable game for the Portuguese this season: the Italian officiated Benfica’s 4-2 win over Real Madrid, with a goal from Trubbin, in the final match of the Champions League group stage.
