Benfica’s president shared some words as he left the wake for the former goalkeeper.

Benfica’s president, Rui Costa, offered heartfelt words about Silvino Louro as he left the wake at the Central Mosque in Lisbon, remembering the former goalkeeper as a remarkable figure in Portuguese football and someone who played an important role in his career.

“He is a prominent figure in Portuguese football, of his generation. An excellent man, I don’t say that because at this moment it’s very easy to say that everyone is very good. Silvino was, in fact, an excellent man,” he stated, also recalling the times when he rose to the first team of Benfica.

I was extremely proud and honored to move up to the senior level with this generation. Sadly, all three have passed away. Personally, they helped me a lot and made me grow a great deal,” he added.

Rui Costa also highlighted the close relationship he maintained with Silvino Louro in his early days as a professional.

“Silvino was always very close to me, with great affection for me, during my entry into professional football. I have the best memories of a great man, a great goalkeeper,” he said.

Asked about the impact of the loss on José Mourinho, with whom he worked for several years, the Benfica director acknowledged that the Benfica coach is devastated.

“Naturally, they worked together for a lifetime, and that’s also evident, as is obvious,” the manager concluded.

As a reminder, Silvino passed away this Thursday  at the age of 67, after a long illness.
