A 1-1 draw in Rabat delays the host’s qualification for the round of 16.

Morocco could only manage a draw against Mali (1-1) and postponed direct qualification for the round of 16, although they are in a privileged position, topping Group A before their final group stage match against Zambia.

After their opening victory against Comoros (2-0), the hosts could have reached six points tonight at the impressive Prince Moulay Abdellah Stadium in Rabat, in a game where they controlled the match, created the best opportunities, but failed to secure the win. With Kylian Mbappé watching from the stands, wearing a jersey of Hakimi, his former PSG teammate, Morocco took the lead in first-half stoppage time with a controversial penalty awarded after VAR review, punishing a handball by Nathan Gassama. Brahim Díaz converted the penalty.

However, in the second half, in the 64th minute, the referee awarded another penalty, this time to Mali, following a push by Jawad El Yamiq on Lassine Sinayoko, also detected by VAR. Sinayoko himself took the penalty to equalize, although Bonou was inches away from making the save.

With this draw, Morocco reinforces its lead in Group A, now with 4 points, ahead of Mali and Zambia, both with two points, while Comoros has only 1.
