Former Arsenal and Juventus goalkeeper, and Austrian international, lost his life after a car crash.

Former goalkeeper Alex Manninger died this Thursday at the age of 48, a victim of a car accident in Austria, confirmed Red Bull Salzburg, the club where he began his career.

According to the Austrian press, the vehicle driven by Manninger collided with a train at a level crossing in Nussdorf am Haunsberg, in the Salzburg region. Despite the intervention of emergency services, the former international player did not survive his injuries.

Arsenal, the club where he rose to prominence in the late 1990s, reacted to the news with a message of condolence, as did Liverpool and the Austrian federation, which highlighted the legacy of the former goalkeeper.

Having earned 33 caps for Austria, Manninger joined Arsenal in 1997 from Grazer AK and made 64 appearances for the Gunners , winning the Premier League and the FA Cup.

Throughout his career, he represented several European clubs, most notably playing in Italy for teams such as Juventus, Bologna, and Siena, in addition to a brief spell at Liverpool towards the end of his career.
