Benfica’s coach defends Argentinian player after learning of the punishment imposed by UEFA.

UEFA has suspended Gianluca Prestianni for six games for homophobic (not racist) insults directed at Vinicius Júnior. When questioned about this after the victory over Moreirense (4-1) , José Mourinho was ironic.

Fans applaud Prestianni

If I were in the stands, I would also applaud, because he’s had a good championship. He’s had a good season, a fantastic job. He’s improved incredibly. Now, tactically, he’s strong. Obviously, he has his fundamental qualities like technique and courage in the game. But he wasn’t a fully prepared player when I arrived, and that’s why I think the fans applaud and like him. The way he recovered a pass that led to the third goal, for example, not all wingers work like that for the team.

Punishment for Prestianni

I heard so much when we played against Real Madrid that I’m now eager to read and hear comments from people who talked so much about it back then. I’m in a position of curiosity and anticipation.
