One of the team’s leaders, an English defender, says the focus is on strengthening the squad: We need more players, we need more quality.
At 33 years old, Harry Maguire remains an important player for Manchester United and is looking forward to playing in his third World Cup for England. With his contract renewed until June 2027 , the experienced player stated that he considers himself, indisputably, one of the best defenders in the world.
“Whatever role the coach puts me in, whether as a starter or a decisive player in the final minutes… I continue to believe, even at my age, that I am indisputably one of the best defenders in the world, both defensively and offensively. I think that’s not in question, Maguire said in an interview with The Athletic .
Maguire had faced criticism and recently lost playing time, but he regained prominence and became an important player again under coach Michael Carrick. The defender believes the team needs to strengthen its squad for the upcoming season.
“This summer is going to be important. We have to make some very good signings. Obviously, we also have a big decision to make regarding the coach, but the main focus is bringing in players. We need more players, we need more quality, players who will get into the starting lineup. If we get the signings right and everything goes well from now until the end of the season, there will be no limits to where we can go. Maguire was included in Thomas Tuchel’s squad for the last international break. He started for England in the friendly against Uruguay and came off the bench in the match against Japan. Despite this, according to The Athletic , names like Ezri Konsa of Aston Villa, Marc Guehi and John Stones of Manchester City, and Trevoh Chalobah of Chelsea are ahead of the United defender in the national team’s pecking order.
