After suffering a heavy defeat against Atlético Madrid in the Spanish Cup, Barcelona lost again, this time in La Liga. Visiting Girona, the Catalan side lost 2-1 and thus missed out on a chance to take the league lead.
João Cancelo was an unused substitute. There were no goals in the first half, but there was excitement in stoppage time. Lamine Yamal missed a penalty (45+1m) and thus wasted the opportunity to put the visitors ahead.
Barcelona scored first, but it was necessary to wait until the second half. Pau Cubarsi opened the scoring in the 59th minute. However, the lead didn’t last long. Three minutes later, Thomas Lemar equalized again (62nd minute).
In the final moments, Girona scored the winning goal. Fran Beltran, formerly of Celta de Vigo, became the hero and completed the comeback in the 87th minute.
Girona were further reduced to ten men after Joel Roca received a straight red card in stoppage time (90+9m).
With this defeat (2-1), Barcelona failed to seize the lead and is in second place with 58 points = two behind leaders Real Madrid. Girona, meanwhile, is in 12th place with 29 points.
