Bottom-placed team manages a draw away to Brentford, following wins against Aston Villa and Liverpool.
The mission remains very difficult, but Wolverhampton has given further proof that – even if they might be relegated to the Championship – they still have a say in the final stretch of the Premier League. And, even without winning this Monday, their say has been made.
After victories against Aston Villa (2-0) and Liverpool (2-1), the bottom-placed team in the Premier League – which has already avoided being the team with the worst performance in the history of the championship – was losing 2-0 away to Brentford, but recovered and added a point, thanks to a 2-2 draw, in the match that closed the 30th round .
Brentford took the lead with a header from Michael Kayode in the 22nd minute, following a cross from Keane Lewis-Potter. In the 37th minute, Igor Thiago, assisted in the area by Dango Ouattara, tapped in for 2-0, beating Portuguese goalkeeper José Sá. A save by goalkeeper Caoimhin Kelleher, who found Ouattara with a great shot.
However, Wolverhampton managed to pull one back before halftime, in the 44th minute, through Adam Armstrong, reigniting the game for the second half, in which they would score 2-2. In the 77th minute, Tolu Arokodare (who had come on in the 74th minute) headed in the equalizer in the box, assisted by João Gomes.
Shortly after, Arokodare almost scored the winning goal, but the ball hit the post (79th minute). Brentford also had a good chance in the 90th minute, but Reiss Nelson headed and shouldered the ball, which grazed the post. By that time, coach Rob Edwards had already brought on Portuguese player Rodrigo Gomes (who entered in the 87th minute), who made a great effort to win a corner in the fifth and final minute of added time. However, the goal came to nothing.
Brentford, managed by Keith Andrews, occupies seventh place with 45 points. Wolverhampton remains in 20th and last place, now with 17 points, three less than Burnley (19th with 20) and 12 points away from the places above the relegation zone, where Nottingham Forest is in 17th place with 29 points, the same as West Ham, 18th in the relegation zone.
