Portugal climbed two places in the world rugby rankings on Monday, a day after winning the Rugby Europe Championship (REC) title , now occupying 14th position, one away from its best ever ranking.

The Portuguese team, after its seventh consecutive victory, overtook Uruguay (15th) and the United States (16th), making the biggest climb of the week in the world rankings.

The “wolves” have recovered six positions since their defeat against Uruguay on November 8th, which at the time relegated the Portuguese team to 20th place, weeks before the draw for the Australia 2027 World Cup, where they were placed in Pot 4, based on that ranking.

On Sunday, Portugal became REC champions for the second time in their history, after beating Georgia (19-17) in the final played in Madrid, Spain.

This was Portugal’s second title at the REC, after 2004, placing them behind Romania (five) and Georgia (17).
