Diogo Rêma is out injured for the National Team, which takes to the field on January 16 against Romania.

The 18 players selected by Paulo Jorge Pereira for the EHF Euro 2026 handball tournament have been announced.

Through social media and in a statement, the Portuguese Handball Federation (FPA) reports that four of the athletes chosen by the coach are still in a competitive period or in the recovery phase. António Machado, João Lourenço, Guilherme Tavares and Diogo Silva will therefore temporarily replace Luís Frade, Miguel Neves, Francisco Costa and João Gomes in the group’s training.

Diogo Rêma is a major absentee from the National Team due to a rupture of the anterior cruciate ligament in his left knee. The FC Porto goalkeeper has since undergone successful surgery and is now in the recovery period.

In preparation for the tournament, Portugal will hold a training camp from December 28th to January 12th. In between, the “Heroes of the Sea” will face Egypt (January 8th) and Iran (January 9th) in the International Tournament in Spain, which precedes the start of the competition. Remember that Portugal is in Group B of the European Championship, which is taking place in Denmark, Sweden and Norway, along with Romania, North Macedonia and the Danish team. Paulo Jorge Pereira’s team will play their first match on January 16th (Romania), at 5pm.
