Government reinforces sports budget with five million euros.

One million will be used to recognize and support outstanding results.

The government will add five million euros to the sports budget, the Ministry of Culture, Youth and Sports confirmed in a statement on Tuesday.

This figure was announced by Minister Margarida Balseiro Lopes at the Voz do Desporto gala. It is in addition to the €62 million already budgeted by the Government and to be distributed until 2028.

According to the ministry, two million euros will “strengthen support for the regular activities of sports federations and the Olympic and Paralympic Committees,” with an equal amount allocated to support high-performance athletes and national teams, and one million euros serving “to recognize and support the excellent results achieved by Portuguese athletes and national teams in major international competitions.

The Government assures that it intends to promote a more balanced financing model, better suited to the current reality of the sports system, valuing the work of federations and strengthening support for athletes, clubs and sports throughout the country. Quoted by the Ministry of Culture, Youth and Sport, Margarida Balseiro Lopes considered that “the increased investment represents a clear commitment to valuing sport as an essential pillar for social cohesion, public health and Portugal’s standing in the world.
