Jovic scores a penalty that knocks Universitatea Craiova out of the play=offs.

Universitatea Craiova, managed by Portuguese coach Filipe Coelho, failed to qualify for the Conference League Round of 16 play-offs after losing 3-2 away to AEK on Thursday.

The Romanian team went into stoppage time leading 2-1, but the Greeks turned the game around with goals in the 90+8 and 90+14 minutes. The winning goal, in fact, was a penalty converted by former Benfica player Luka Jovic.

Thus, Universitatea Craiova finished in 25th place and failed to qualify because they scored fewer goals than Sigma Olomouc = 6-8 against 7-9.

Also on Thursday, the Spanish side Rayo Vallecano and the German side Mainz secured a place in the Round of 16, where the French side Strasbourg were already positioned.

The Polish team Raków, the Greek team AEK Athens, the Czech team Sparta Prague, the Ukrainian team Shakhtar Donetsk, and the Cypriot team AEK Larnaca also secured their places in the Round of 16. Among the teams that will be in the play=off for access to the Round of 16, on February 19th and 26th, highlights include the English team Crystal Palace, the Dutch team AZ Alkmaar, and the Italian team Fiorentina, who will be seeded. The other teams that will play the second leg at home are the Swiss team Lausanne, the Polish team Lech Poznan, the Turkish team Samsunspor, the Slovenian team Celje, and the Croatian team Rijeka.
