Just by qualifying for the quarter-finals, Sporting’s coffers swelled by 12.5 million euros.

Sporting’s historic participation in this edition of the Champions League, paralleled only by the 1982/83 season, not only brings prestige to the club… but also money. The Lions have already earned 79.8 million euros since the start of the season.

Let’s break it down. Just for participating in the league phase, each club received € 18.42 million upfront. Then, qualifying for the round of 16 brought in another € 11 million .

The epic 5-3 aggregate victory over Bodo/Glimt , with a comeback win at Alvalade, meant that Sporting received an additional 12.5 million euros for qualifying for the quarter-finals.

This alone amounts to 41.92 million euros. Then there are the match bonuses for wins and draws in the league phase. Five wins, each worth 2.1 million euros, total 10.5 million . The draw against Juventus gave Sporting an additional 700,000 euros .

Then there are other prizes added –  16.2 million for the base value of the country’s market volume and the club’s coefficient;  8.25 million bonus for seventh place; and 2 million for the top eight in the league phase. Therefore, Sporting have already earned €79.8 million in prize money in this edition of the Champions League… surely a club record in this area.
