Theo Bongonda scores the only goal of the match, in the opening round of Group D.

The Democratic Republic of Congo got off to a winning start in the Africa Cup of Nations (CAN), beating Benin in a match where Theo Bongonda was the hero and decisive in the outcome.

The match saw the opposing team have some advantage, but the only shot on target from Congo… resulted in a goal. In the 16th minute, the Spartak Moscow striker responded perfectly to a cross and finished for 1-0.

Thus, both teams went to the locker rooms with the score unchanged, and the second half could have started with another goal for the Congolese team, but Bakambu was offside and the goal didn’t count. It’s worth noting Benin’s greater ball possession and number of shots, but lacked efficiency in front of Mpasi-Nzau’s goal.

The Congo national team thus earns its first three points in this group stage of the competition, with Group B also consisting of Senegal and Botswana, who will face each other at 3 pm.
