Courtois: Sporting? You already know we’re going to face Man City.

In a flash interview with Movistar after Real Madrid’s victory over Benfica (2-1, 3-1 on aggregate) in the Champions League play-off , Courtois ironically guaranteed that Manchester City will be their opponent in the quarter-finals. On Wednesday night, the Real Madrid goalkeeper recalled the draw that was annulled in December 2021. After the first draw set Benfica and Real Madrid as opponents in the round of 16, the replay resulted in PSG-Real Madrid and Benfica-Ajax.

“You already know we’re going to face Man City. I hope that changes. I haven’t played against Sporting in a long time, since 2015. They have a beautiful stadium and are also a strong opponent,” said the Belgian international.

Strictly speaking, Courtois hasn’t played against Sporting since September 30, 2014. Then coached by José Mourinho, Chelsea won 1-0 at Alvalade, thanks to a goal from midfielder Matic.

Almost 12 years later, Sporting could face Courtois again. Friday’s draw will determine whether the Lions will play against Real Madrid or against the Norwegian side Bodo/Glimt .
